, that was arranged at NHH Norwegian School of Economcis in 2008.
Lars Jacob’s chapter explores the protagonist Meursault in Albert Camus’ classic L’Étrangèr , and the purpose of the chapter is to uncover important aspects of his character that can have implications for Ethics of Leadership.
Here you can read an abstract of the chapter:
This paper is an exploration of the protagonist Meursault in ‘The Stranger’ by Albert Camus. ‘The Stranger’ is widely considered an ambiguous novel, due to both the protagonist Meursault’s unwillingness to reveal the reasons for his acts and the author’s inclination to omit the parts of the story that might render Meursault’s acts more understandable to the reader. The protagonist in The Stranger may be conceptualized and understood at least in three different ways: (1) as the incarnation of moral blindness, (2) as man devoid of community, and (3) as an existential hero, i.e. the authentic man. This paper explores the former interpretation while lending insights also from the two other avenues of interpretation. Finally, possible lessons for the ethics of leadership are outlined.
